9-1-1 for Kids® is the official emergency caller training program created by US 9-1-1 communication center officials, emergency medical, fire and law enforcement professionals who were charged with the task of developing educational tools to help reduce the alarmingly high numbers of non-emergency calls made to 9-1-1.

The organization was established in 1994, and has uniquely distinguished itself as the only public safety education program to be endorsed and supported by: APCO International (Assn. of Public Safety Communications Officials); E-911 Institute; NENA (National Emergency Numbers Assn.); and NASNA (National Assn. of Nine-one-one Administrators).

9-1-1 caller training is critical for all age groups.  However, through the collaborative efforts of the San Jose Police Department, the California chapter of the National Emergency Numbers Association (CalNENA), the State of California 9-1-1 Program Office, the Texas State 9-1-1 Commission, corporate and individual donors, created an exciting “kid-tested and teacher approved” program and “edutainment” video developed by some of Hollywood’s finest children’s entertainment professionals.
The 9-1-1 for Kids® Classroom Kit was developed to make learning how to use 9-1-1 fun and memorable.
Through the lovable characters created by Emmy and Peabody award winning-master puppeteer Tony Urbano (the aliens in “Men in Black”,  the Downey Snuggle Bear and the McDonald food puppets to name a few of his credits) and the catchy 9-1-1 for Kids® song by composer and record producer, Gary Powell (“The Little Mermaid”, “Aladdin”-original scores and “Lion King”- book and tape series) the 19 minute video- “The Great 9-1-1 Adventure,” continues to delight youngsters while teaching them the proper use of 9-1-1.

The 9-1-1 for Kids® program has reached over five million children since its inception in 1994, and has helped to save thousands of lives and properties through preparing youngsters to know what to do in an emergency. The award-winning student tested and teacher approved 9-1-1 Caller Training classroom kit and educational support collateral is a comprehensive child-friendly presentation which teaches everyone: (1) When it’s OK to call 9-1-1; (2) How to dial 9-1-1; and (3) What to say to the 9-1-1 dispatcher.

By educating children at an early age on how to use 9-1-1 correctly, youngsters can act quickly and confidently to obtain the necessary public safety or medical assistance they need to save lives and property, as well as teaching their siblings, family members, friends and neighbors. 9-1-1 for Kids® has proactively worked to decrease the incidence of accidental and prank 9-1-1 calls since its inception.  The reduction not only has saved our government millions of dollars but has also helped to maintain the integrity of our 9-1-1 emergency network.
